I invite you to make 2020 a Weslandia summer!

I grew up in a time when playing outdoors was what every kid did during the summer. The book, Weslandia by Paul Fleischman, makes you want to create a space of your own and explore the world in new ways. When I received the manuscript nearly 25 years ago, I was living on an island off the coast of Maine. It made me want to go outside and create something. It will do the same thing for you, I hope. Despite the restrictions and uncertainty of our time, the pandemic does offer us a rare opportunity to create and find adventure right in our own backyards, local parks and land trusts, near-by fields, woods and wild spaces.

What kind of civilization will YOU create this summer? Whether it is building a new shelter

or re-discovering an old hideout, learning a new skill, tending a garden, or reading in a makeshift hammock, I encourage you to get outside, 'to open yourself up to chance, . . invite the new and unknown!"

Rules and Regulations

To enter the #weslandiasummer contest, you need to do the following:

1. Share an outdoor photo of yourself with the book Weslandia OR post any photo of you having a backyard or local summer adventure. Tag the photo with #weslandiasummer

2. Follow me on instragram at @kevinhawkesoffical or on facebook.

3. Entries will close on July 17, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. EST.

4. Prize includes a signed hardcover edition of Weslandia plus a Weslandia poster. Three winners will be chosen at random. Winners will be notified by direct message and announced on instragram. Postage will be paid by Kevin Hawkes Illustration.

5. Entries are limited to US Residents.

6. Participants can enter as many times as they choose.
