Reviews

“This story is a persuasive argument for a little solitude and space to think and might give families prone to over scheduling a way to talk about scaling back.”
Newsday

"Anderson and Hawkes have triumphed with this imaginative fable.”

School Library Journal

“M. T. Anderson’s lyric homage to simplicity and self-reliance is brought to life in arresting and vivid detail by the masterful artwork of Kevin Hawkes.

Candlewick Press

“A solitary idyll is disturbed by easy entertainment in this gorgeous, complex fable. Hawkes’s illustrations complement the language perfectly, serenely balanced compositions giving way to sinister colors and frenetic perspectives.

Insider's Scoop

I love creating worlds and jumped at the chance to illustrate this beautiful text from M. T. Anderson.  While I was illustrating this book, I went on vacation to Southern Utah and was so impressed with the red rock cliffs in that area.    You can see that influence throughout the book.  This book provided a lot of learning and challenges for me.  I enjoyed doing the pen and ink drawings, as well as the opportunity to experiment using watercolors along with acrylics.
